Kirtan?
Nu?
First developed in India, kirtan is a meditative, call-and-response chant
for
singer and non-singer alike - a tradition that is easily adapted to Jewish
spirituality. Drawing on the power of the repetition of ancient sacred
phrases, we use Hebrew chants to create an experiential connection to the
Holy Ancient One.
Bring
musical instruments, drums, bells, timbrels, and creativity. A core
repertoire of chants has been developed and will be added to, with YOUR
help. Handouts are provided with lyrics, and most of the chants are simple
words in Hebrew or Aramaic. This is a fun, musical meditation for everyone.
By chanting sacred language that focuses on the miracle of creation and that cultivates gratitude, we connect our very breath to the divine, merging with meaning, and returning redeemed. Intoning phrases, words, verses and melodies, we breathe ourselves into Holy connection. This is spirituality-as-direct-experience. |
Rhythmic
chanting also induces breathing patterns known as pranayama, that
in
turn have positive and profound effects on the mind and body. The quickest
way to
calm, focus, and still the mind is through the breath. There are many pranayama
techniques, all methods of controlling and optimizing the prana, or
life-energy: in Hebrew, the "ruach ha nefesh" - "the wind of
the soul."
